Do I need a REAL ID to fly?
Sources checked . Final review by Sean Williams pending.
Yes. Since May 7, 2025, TSA requires a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable ID, such as a passport, for domestic flights. Compliant cards usually show a star. Travelers without acceptable ID can pay a $45 TSA ConfirmID fee to try identity verification, but TSA says there is no guarantee it works.
| Enforcement start | May 7, 2025 |
|---|---|
| How to spot a compliant card | A star (or flag) in the top corner, or an "Enhanced" license |
| Alternatives TSA accepts | U.S. passport or passport card, and other IDs on TSA's acceptable ID list |
| No acceptable ID | Optional $45 TSA ConfirmID fee; payment valid for 10 days; verification not guaranteed |
| Children | TSA does not require children under 18 to show ID when traveling with a companion within the U.S. |
When did REAL ID become required?
TSA began enforcing REAL ID on May 7, 2025. Since then, travelers 18 and older need a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable ID, such as a passport, to go through security for domestic flights.
How can I tell if my license is REAL ID-compliant?
Look for a star, or in some states a flag, in the top corner of the card. An "Enhanced" driver's license also works. If yours has neither, it is likely not compliant.
What other IDs does TSA accept?
A U.S. passport or passport card works, and so do other IDs on TSA's acceptable identification list. If you already have a valid passport, you do not need to rush to the DMV before your next flight.
Use your passport if your license is not compliant and your trip is soon. Get a REAL ID at the DMV if you fly domestically often and do not want to carry a passport.
What happens if I show up without acceptable ID?
You can pay an optional $45 TSA ConfirmID fee, valid for 10 days from the travel date you enter, and TSA will try to verify your identity. TSA says there is no guarantee it can do so, and without verification you may not get through security.
Do children need REAL ID?
No. TSA does not require children under 18 to show identification when traveling with a companion within the United States. For international trips, children need a passport; see our passport guide.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a passport accepted instead of REAL ID?
- Yes. TSA says a valid passport is acceptable identification for domestic flights in place of a REAL ID-compliant license.
- How do I know if my license is REAL ID?
- Most compliant licenses have a star in the top corner. Enhanced driver's licenses issued by some states are also acceptable. If you are unsure, check with your state's DMV.
- What is TSA ConfirmID?
- TSA ConfirmID is an optional $45 fee for travelers who arrive without acceptable ID. TSA will try to verify your identity, but says it cannot guarantee it, so you could still miss your flight.
- Do I need REAL ID to go on a cruise?
- REAL ID rules apply to domestic flights and some federal facilities. Cruise lines set their own document rules based on CBP requirements; see our passport guide.
- Can I use a mobile driver's license at TSA?
- TSA accepts digital IDs at participating airports for some states. Carry your physical ID as backup, because availability varies.
